Description
Unlike catholic churches, lay people are encouraged to enter the chancel and take communion at the altar. Therefore, even the least of these get to climb these stairs and see the beautiful stonework, plasterwork, and paint up close. During tourist hours though, it is blocked off...thus making this picture possible.
Look at the stonework above the latar table, and you can see some darker stone. Most of the carved stone above the altar table (which depicts Christ praying at Gethsemane whilst his disciples sleep) survived the collapse of the church in WWII, and is now returned to its original location.
