Below the Famous Concourse

Description

Unless you're from New York or an avid railfan with a New York fetish, you're probably not aware that Grand Central terminal has a second concourse directly below the famous one with its starry ceiling and gigantic windows. Down in this concourse, an additional set of tracks comes in, and there's no better place to get a seafood dinner than at the Oyster Bar, which is directly behind the camera.

Although Grand Central Terminal has survived the wrecking ball of urban renewal, unlike its downtown colleague, Penn Station, this opulent bahnhof doesn't serve any prestigious long distance trains anymore. The most famous train to depart from GCT was the 20th Century Limited. Its successor, Amtrak's Lakeshore Limited, departs from the bowels of Penn Station now, and the only trains to call here belong to Metro North, which I say is rather sad.

I still wonder how anyone would have dared to tear down Penn Station... It was such a monumental building. :(
