Pankrac Metro Station

Description

Our hotel was only a hop, skip, and jump away from the Pankrac metro station, so we left the car and enjoyed the convenient transportation of Prague's beautiful transit system. The initial network was built in the late 60's and early 70's by the Soviets, and its beautiful architecture has been preserved. Several stations got renamed when the Soviets left however, since many stations were named after Soviet politicians.

It's interesting to me though, to compare this richly-decorated subway station with the spartan affairs found in most American cities. Even the tiled walls of the Paris metro don't hold a candle to the marble paneling and other architectural ornamentations provided within this Soviet-built tunnel.

And it's most certainly better decorated that some standard tube stations in London. Although some have had their tiling restored and others have recieved promotional displays on their walls, but as far as initial effort into beautification is concerned, the Soviets certainly had the right idea.
