Artist's Comments

Instead of having a combination of colored lights to govern a train's speed, this signal has a target that displays Hindu-Arabic numbers denoting the maximum authorized speed at which a train may move given the current conditions. They're dark now, since the actual signal is red and an outbound train is coming in the opposite direction...:) Another number target displays the station track number to which the train has been routed. I've seen similar systems in Japan.

To be even more precise, it denotes one tenth of the maximum authorized speed ;)

I'd love to have an explanation of all the signal aspects and their meaning if you (or anybody else) know them. German signaling is clearly much different from any signal system in the US.

To be honest, I only know very few of them. I usually check out various pages on the internet that deal with this topic to find out what each signal's different settings mean.

Meine Lieblingsquelle für Informationen ist stellwerke.de. Die vielen verschiedenen Signalsysteme machen es nicht gerade einfach, dies alles zu verstehen.

I figured out a bit when I crossed over this same railroad today. There was a Diesel engine dragging a cut of flatcars down the Zementwerk spur, and the three small lights (which all shine a lunar aspect) below the larger color aspects denoted the direction of the switch points...bottom and upper left for diverging left, bottom and upper right for...you guessed it...diverging right...:)
