Just a few blocks up the street from my new home, the Rhein-Neckar transit authority is replacing streetcar tracks that have supported trams for more than 80 years. This is the climactic moment in the process of joining rails together in Hellish Matrimony. I kicked up the shadows 4% and the highlights 18%. In its raw form, the brightness of the flames caused the camera to make all the roadbed around the conflagration too dark. The increase in highlights also lent more detail to the volcanic fireball blasting out of the welding pot. More pictures from this exciting process to come.
Thermite is still being used? I would have thought they'd have gone over to electric wielding, like nearly everyone else in the railroad business. But then, it wouldn't have made for such a great picture, so I won't complain.
LOL I'm guessing it has something to do with greater portability, and apparently thermite welds might have proven more durable against the constant pounding of train wheels. Thanks for the compliment and the favourite.
The fireworks or my photograph? I venture to say the fireworks. It's a real thrill to watch this part, but it's only a tiny fraction of the work involved with joining rail. The thermite burns itself out in less than a minute.
