View From the Sleeping Car

Description

After departing Berlin Spandau, our train rolled through the residential districts of West Berlin. With the help of mirrors mounted on our sleeping room wall, I managed to get a picture that shows much more of the room than possible just shooting from one corner. The beds are perpendicular to the car's length, and the double-decker car allows a second bedroom to exist directly beneath ours. The mirrors reflect the view out the roof window, which allows the occupant of the upper bunk to see outside as easily as the person below. The lower mirror has two interesting things reflected from its surface. One is my knee, as I was reclining on my bed when I took the picture. The other is the very unique plate girder bridge visible out the window. I took another picture of it as the train crossed it, but the window reflections were too distractive. In the foreground, you can see the knob which controls the temperature of the water in the wash basin, while the basin itself has retractable doors over it so one can obtain more counter space as needed. Compared to a standard single decker room though, this accomodation was a bit cramped but still way better than trying to sleep in an insufficiently-reclined airline seat.

That sounds interesting, I've never travelled in such a carriage before. But then again, my only travelling done by long distance train around here was on school trips, as my family is rather car centered.
